Dandruff is a very common hair problem these days. One in two people is plagued by dandruff problem. Dandruff affects the skin of the head or scalp and results in flaking of the scalp. The flakes look like snow flakes and fall off, littering the shoulders and face. People with dandruff are often embarrassed because of the problem. They avoid wearing dark clothes, for it makes the dandruff flakes prominent on their shoulders. Bacterial or fungal attack is the main cause of dandruff. More accurately, the fungus Malasezia furfur leads to dandruff or excessive scaling and flaking of scalp. The other factors triggering dandruff problem are malnutrition, yeasts infection, use of alkaline soaps and shampoos, zinc and calcium deficiencies etc.

Dandruff results in intense itching and spreads from person to person by means of direct or indirect contact like sharing combs, towels, garments etc. Dandruff falls in to two categories: waxy dandruff and dry dandruff. In case of waxy dandruff, the dandruff mingles with sebum or oil and sticks to the scalp in the form of thick scattered patches. Dry dandruff; on the other hand, occurs in the form of loose flakes that can be dusted off easily. Dry dandruff often gets trapped in the upper layers of hair. Dandruff problem is often mistaken for dry scalp problem; but they are not the same.

Home Remedies

1. Use apple cider vinegar for the final rinse while washing hair. This checks dandruff problem.

2. Mix 2 tablespoon cosmetic vinegar and 6 tablespoons hot water. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and dab affected scalp with it. Keep overnight. Next morning wash hair with herbal shampoo or mild baby shampoo. This is a fruitful way to treat dandruff.

3. Massage heated olive oil on sesame oil on scalp followed by the wrapping of hot towel on the head for sometime. This is a proven dandruff cure.

4. Massaging scalp with almond oil for 5 minutes and then allowing it to stay for sometime also expels dandruff successfully.

5. Apply a mixture of curd, lime juice and Indian gooseberry juice on scalp. Keep overnight. Next morning wash off hair with herbal shampoo. This is an effective home remedy for dandruff.

6. Washing hair with the powder of green gram is a solution to dandruff problem

7. Rinse hair with lime juice. Use the juice for the final rinse. This is a popular dandruff remedy.

8. Soak fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning make a paste of the seeds and apply on affected scalp. Keep for 45 minutes and then wash off with herbal shampoo. This helps to prevent dandruff.

9. Hot stream bath is a useful dandruff remedy.

10. Enough exposure of the affected scalp to sunlight cures dandruff problem.

11. Massage scalp with snake gourd juice. This relieves dandruff problem.

12. Combine beet root juice, ginger juice and cider vinegar. Apply the mixture on scalp. This ensures the release from dandruff problem.

13. Mix coconut oil with 1/100 of black pepper and apply on scalp. This puts an end to dandruff problem.

14. Application of a mixture of beet root juice and henna on scalp also yields rewarding results.

15. Soak the peel of lime in coconut milk or any oil and leave it out in sun for 10 days. Later massage the milk or oil on scalp to get rid of dandruff.

16. Mix pure apple juice with thrice the quantity of warm water and rub the mixture on scalp. This is a beneficial anti-dandruff remedy.
